Best Friend or Boyfriend? (Us Against The World)

Sonali - Okay, first of all, how in the world do you manage to be the first to comment?? Haha, it happens pretty much all the time, thank you!! Anyway... My mind is drawing a blank!! Lol I have no idea what that word is!! Oh you’re gonna have to tell me because I seriously can’t figure it out. Oh thank you! I’m glad you understood the supposed kissing scene because I was wondering whether people would get it or not. Ahh I’m glad you think I update fast, because some people think I take ages. Which I think is crazy. But oh well..Love in return ;)

Ann - Ooh I’m glad you think so!! Thanks for liking my stories :) Hmm well Ella might change her mind about what she thinks in this chapter. You’ll see :)

Tina - I’m glad :) Haha, yeah I hoped that at least someone was going to think that they were actually about to kiss! Mmm yes I was trying to think of a name for Ella’s cousin and then I read your comment and thought your name would be perfect :) Well I think Denise was just trying to be helpful and a good girlfriend and whatever :) Yeah I think Us Against The World is the suitable title for this story, but if it’s taken like you said then I’ll have to stick with this title, which I think is fine too :)

Imani - Oh thank you for all those suggestions! I think they’re all great, and I might use them.. Or I might leave the title as it is, I’m still undecided. Anyway, thank you so much :)

Dani - Haha, yeah a lot of people seemed to think that..I’m glad that scene worked out. Thank you so much!

Juliet - Haha, okay so I just re-read that part and I have to admit I started laughing too, I get what you mean :) Ahh thank you for mentioning the title, I’ve decided I am going to keep it because it just suits. I’m glad you like the stories enough to read them at that time! Thank you!

Mariam - Haha I burst out laughing as soon as I read your comment, I’m glad you think so! And yeah, I was thinking I might bring that guy back too. Probably will :)

Shakayla - Ooh well I’m glad you think so. I love Ella too, she’s a lot like me, even the eating bit :) Wow, this is the second time someone’s commented on my stories saying that they’re in love with their best friend... I never realized how these stories could be so similar to real life. Anyways, good luck with that and I hope you enjoy the chapter!

Smita - Mmm yes I’ll admit if that happened to me I’d be pretty angry. Ohh you’re not speaking to him? Why?? Anyways, enjoy :)

Chapter Four

ELLA

‘Hey! Where’s all the food?!’ I shifted through Zach’s now immaculate cupboards. It was so organized it was ridiculous.

Zach came up behind me. ‘I did tell you she rearranged it.’

‘Yes but did she take all the edible food out? What is this cra- stuff?’ I pulled out a packet of god knows what. It had some type of foreign writing on it.

Zach laughed. ‘Uh, well Denise kind of likes to eat healthy stuff.’

‘Ohhh...Does she even know what this is? It’s written in something weird looking.’

‘It’s Arabic.’

I put the packet back in the cupboard. ‘She can read Arabic?’

‘Actually yes. Along with Chinese, french and something else I can never remember.’

‘Well damn, that’s really cool. Anyway, she didn’t throw my food out did she? Wouldn’t she have put it somewhere?’ I shifted through all the bottom cupboards but couldn’t find anything. Jeez.

At the sound of a car engine nearing I poked my head out. ‘Who’s that?’

Zach looked out of the window and groaned. ‘My mum.’

I jumped up and looked out. Oh it was too. Me and Priscilla, Zach’s mum, never got along. She hated me because I wasn’t ladylike, or rich like her family was. She never got why me and Zach were friends, until she came to the conclusion that he was friendly to me out of pity. It took all of my strength not to slap that lady right across the face. But, since she’s Zach’s mum I have to be nice to her. ‘I’m out.’

‘You don’t have to go.’

‘Well unless you want to start world war three, then yes I do.’

He sighed. 'Look I know my mum’s not exactly easy to get along with but-’

'Zachary!’ Priscilla’s voice rang out through the house.

Zach cringed and I laughed. ‘Good luck.’ I tapped his arm before walking to the door which let you exit the house from the kitchen. Thank God. But by the time I reached it, the door was locked and Priscilla had entered. I jiggled the door knob. Damn. I turned around just in time to see Priscilla pulling away from Zach. She raised an eyebrow when she saw me.

‘Well hello Ella. It’s nice to see you again.’

I faked a smile. ‘Hey Priscilla, nice to see you too.’

‘Well will you be joining us?’

‘Huh?’

Priscilla looked unimpressed by my response. Oops. ‘We’re going out for dinner. Have you met Denise?’

Something was wrong. Did she actually just invite me to dinner? ‘Yes I have.’

‘She’s nice isn’t she?’

‘Yeah sh-’

'I’m so glad that her and Zach are together. I think they’re just perfect, don’t you?’

'Absolutely.’ I tried to hide the sarcasm in my voice. Typical of her to ask me a question then cut me off.

‘So, are you going to come?’

‘Uhh, I don’t-’ Zach shot me a pleading look from behind his mum. Please, he mouthed. Gah! Oh he owes me.

‘Sure. I’d love to.’ I said reluctantly. Zach grinned and mouthed a thank you.

‘Great!’ Oh seriously what was wrong with this woman? She never says great. Well not when it had to do with me anyway. ‘Let’s leave now. I’ve already called Denise and she’s meeting us there. This is going to be perfect!’ Priscilla clapped her hands together and walked out of the room.

I looked back at Zach. ‘Hey what’s up with your mum? She’s being nice to me.’

Zach shrugged. ‘How should I know? But anyway, thanks for coming.’

‘Yeah, uh, why do you want me there anyway?’

‘I need you to be there. Otherwise I’ll go insane.’

‘Yeah, well now I’m gonna go insane along with you. Thanks for that.’

Zach laughed and led me out of the room. ‘Come on, it won’t be bad.’

‘Yeah, it’ll be terrible.’

I should have known that we were going to the most expensive restaurant in town. I sat at the table next to Zach since I refused to sit next to Priscilla. But I had my doubts now because she was right in front of me. I couldn’t look up without seeing her. Great.

‘Denise darling, how are you? You look stunning tonight.’ I had to force myself not to roll my eyes as they kissed each other’s cheeks.

‘Thank you Priscilla, I’m fine. And how about you?’

‘Oh good, good darling, here sit down.’

Denise did so and smiled at the three of us. I attempted a smile in return, but I honestly wasn’t in the mood. Priscilla smiled and patted her hand. ‘So, tell me, how was work?’ And before Denise could answer, she spoke again. ‘Ella did you know that Denise already has a job? She’s an architect. Isn’t that wonderful?’

‘Really wonderful.’ I echoed sarcastically.

‘I think it’s great that you’ve already got your life sorted out, and so young as well! More girls should be like you.’ Priscilla looked straight at me as she said that. Oh hell no. So this is why she wanted me to come. Ugh. I pursed my lips, hoping nothing would come out.

‘Oh no, I just got lucky.’ Denise said while giving me a small smile. I attempted to smile back, but Priscilla was seriously getting on my nerves.

‘Yes well it’s good you did. I mean, all Ella’s doing is-’

‘Mum look the waiter’s here.’ Zach interrupted her. Thank God. I was just about to explode. When the waiter was done taking orders I opened up my phone underneath the table. I needed to get out of here. Luckily I could send a message without looking, so I sent one to my dad asking for help.

I grinned as I put the phone away. Dad always saved me when I was in situations like this. I’d sent him messages like that a thousand times before.

ZACH

I couldn’t believe my mum. Did she really invite Ella just to make her feel bad? Of course she did. I shouldn’t be surprised really. But Ella’s my best friend, nothing will ever change that. Why can’t she deal with that already?

I have absolutely no idea how the conversation topic changed. Women. But somehow, mum and Denise were talking about baby names. I took a sip of my beer and glanced at Ella, who had the most bored expression on her face that it made me laugh.

Mum turned to me. ‘What are you smiling about Zachary?’

I groaned inwardly and saw Ella smirk. ‘Uh, nothing mum. Just thinking.’

Suddenly a waiter came up to the table, holding a phone. ‘Um, excuse me, but we’ve received a call for someone named Ella?’

Ella perked up and straightened in her chair. 'That’s me.’ She reached for the phone and put it to her ear. 'Dad? Dad, wait, what- You’re where?! No, no it’s fine. Just hold on, I’ll be there as soon as I can.’ I rolled my eyes and grinned. Should have known she was going to pull something like that.

Denise looked genuinely concerned. I had to smirk at that. ‘Ella is everything all right?’ She asked once Ella returned the phone.

Ella nodded while standing up. ‘Yeah I just really need to go. I’m sorry.’

‘It’s fine, I just hope your dad’s all right.’

Ella tried to conceal her grin. ‘Yeah, so do I. Bye!’ She said the last part a bit too enthusiastically. I watched as Ella walked away from our table. Just before the door, she turned around and winked.

ELLA

Hours later, when I was sitting on the couch in dad’s apartment, was when I heard the knock on the door. I got up and lazily opened it then immediately turned to sit back down on the couch.

‘Nice escape.’ Zach commented as he sat at the opposite end.

I shrugged. ‘You gotta do what you gotta do.’

‘Well next time you could at least include me in it. Say you needed a ride or something.’

I laughed. ‘Didn’t you enjoy dinner?’

‘Oh no, it was great.’ He replied sarcastically.

‘Whoa, ease up on the sarcasm there.’

He grinned and playfully nudged my legs. ‘Well maybe I’d rather spend time with you.’

I smiled and shook my head. ‘There’s that sweet talk again. You better watch out with that though. My dad’s here.’

‘I’ll say boy, you back off of my daughter!’ Dad’s deep voice rang out from the kitchen.

Zach laughed. ‘Sorry Jackson!’

‘Don’t worry about it Zachary!’

I smiled and removed my gaze from the television set. ‘What are you making? I’m starving!’

Dad walked out of the kitchen with two plates full of food. ‘You’re always starving. Maybe if you’d actually eaten at that restaurant you wouldn’t be.’

‘Hey if you were there you would have done the same thing. I’m sorry Zach but I was going crazy in there. I think at one point they started talking about baby names.’

Zach groaned. ‘They were.’

Dad chuckled deeply and handed me and Zach a plate. He ignored Zach when he tried to reject it, so Zach left it sitting in his lap. ‘Better watch out there boy. Baby names is dangerous territory. I remember when Ella’s mum started talking about it. Damn near scared the hell out of me.’

‘Yeah well, hopefully they were just talking about that randomly.’

Dad cleared his throat. ‘Doubt it. Next thing you know you’ve got a room in your house for a nursery.’

‘Nah. I’ve only got two rooms in my house. Mine and El’s. That’s all I need.’ I smiled at the mention of my room. I didn’t mean to have it, but there was just this one week before I moved into my apartment where I stayed at Zach’s until all my stuff was ready. I stayed a bit longer than planned so he ended up setting it up for me.

I laughed. ‘Well make sure my room stays there. No offense but if your girlfriend takes over that room I will get angry.’

Zach shook his head. ‘She won’t, I’ll make sure of it. You’re my best friend. You’ll always have that room as long as you want it.’

‘I better.’ I muttered. But I wondered if he knew how serious I was.
